The Social Innovation Fund supports high-performing organizations developing innovative solutions to social problems. Earlier this year, the National Fund was among the very first organizations selected to receive a grant through the Social Innovation Fund, highlighting the importance of our work and the potential it offers for identifying and bringing innovative workforce solutions to scale.

Health Care Training Institute

The Boston Health Care and Research Training Institute (BHCRTI) provides entry-level and incumbent workers with education, training, and supports to enable them to build skills, earn higher wages, and advance along career paths in health care-related occupations. Begun in 2000, BHCRTI has received funding from SkillWorks since 2003 for expansion and career development services.

Hotel Training Center

The Hotel Training Center (HTC) provides skills training and job placement services for under employed and unemployed individuals seeking entry to the hospitality industry and incumbent workers seeking skills upgrades or advancement within the industry.

Partners in Career and Workforce Development

Partners in Career and Workforce Development (PCWD), led by Partners HealthCare, addresses labor shortages in nursing and other technical health care occupations by providing opportunities for entry-level workers and low-income Boston residents to begin a career in this industry.

Partners in Automotive Career Education

Partners in Automotive Career Education, a partnership of four automotive repair firms with two community-based organizations and two schools, is building new career training capacity in automotive technology and repair for low-income Boston residents. PACE first offered training in January 2005 after 10 months of development.

Building Services Industry Career Path Project

The Building Services Industry Career Path Project helps lower-skilled workers and recent immigrants enter the building services industry and expand opportunities for working janitorial staff. Since early 2005, some 200 incumbent workers have received training and participating employers have addressed the need to clarify career paths and human resource practices in building maintenance.

Funder Collaboratives: A Philanthropic Strategy for Supporting Workforce Intermediaries

Across the country, funder collaboratives pool funds to foster the formation and expansion of workforce intermediaries and to advocate for policies that will sustain these new organizations. The power of these collaboratives comes not just from the funds they bring to programs but, even more crucially, from the alignment of civic leadership around a common vision for the community. This report was prepared for Investing in Workforce Intermediaries, itself a collaboration of the Annie E. Casey, Rockefeller, and Ford foundations.

They work in diverse settings and under myriad titles to improve access to health care for underserved populations using culturally appropriate methods. Despite their importance, community health workers are often not well rewarded, and their job tenure is unstable. Well-defined career paths are lacking, as are systematic skills sets and credentials recognized across work settings and usable for higher education.

The Hotel Career Center, a partnership between the International Institute of Boston and the Hilton Hotel Corporation, is helping low-income recent immigrants move toward economic self-sufficiency, while at the same time helping the company train and retain high-performing employees. HCC provides job-specific language and skills training to program participants and places them in positions with growth potential at partner hotels.

Building Services Industry Career Path Project

In order to build career advancement opportunities for low-skill building custodians, the Voice and Future Fund, the nonprofit arm of Service Employees International Union Local 615, partners with building management companies to improve English language skills among a large immigrant workforce and to provide them with more advanced training in facilities maintenance and skilled trades, leading to career pathways into full-time employment with benefits.

Working Toward Reinvention: SkillWorks at Three

Launched in 2003, SkillWorks is the largest effort in Boston’s history to substantially improve workforce development services for both low-skill/low-income residents and for business. This ambitious, five-year initiative has since become a national model, inspiring other communities and states to launch similar initiatives. This report looks at what SkillWorks has to tell us about the formation of partnerships, engaging employers, aligning resources around a common goal, and the challenges in advancing low-skilled adults toward family-sustaining incomes.
