The National Fund for Workforce Solutions: A History of Collaboration

In 2007, several national foundations and the U.S. Department of Labor launched the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, a $50 million effort to strengthen and expand high-impact workforce development initiatives across the country. NFWS, which builds on years of important work by many people and institutions both nationally and locally, has the potential to play a major role in improving how workforce development services are funded and delivered.

National Fund for Workforce Solutions: Experience and Evidence

The strategies of the National Fund for Workforce Solutions derive from strong evidence that workforce partnerships or intermediaries and sectoral approaches work. This NFWS brief summarizes this evidence.

The National Fund for Workforce Solutions is a five-year, $30 million effort to strengthen and expand high-impact workforce development initiatives around the country. NFWS is dedicated to moving America’s low-wage workforce into higher paying jobs, while providing employers with the skilled workers they need. Jobs for the Future and the Council on Foundations are national partners with the National Fund for Workforce Solutions.

Sustaining the Promise: Realizing the Potential of Workforce Intermediaries and Sector Projects

In the past decade, workforce development practitioners, policymakers, and funders have increasingly favored the development of complex workforce development projects managed by intermediaries. These projects, usually focused on one industry or sector, provide a wide range of education, training, and support services for low-income adults.
