Green Pathways Peer Learning Meeting

On September 22-23, 2010, the National Fund held a Peer Learning Meeting on Green Career Pathways in Chicago, IL. The goals for this meeting were:

  • Explore approaches to developing green careers and advancing lower-skilled adults.
  • Share strategies and lessons for engaging employers in green career pathways.
  • Identify ways to leverage local, state and federal efforts in support of the creation and expansion of green career pathways.

Policy Webinar: New Financing for Workforce Partnerships; Lessons from the NFWS Alternative Financing State Policy Advocacy Projects

In summer 2008, NFWS funded three regional funding collaboratives to advocate for and implement new mechanisms for funding workforce partnerships. The Bay Area Workforce Funders Collaborative and the New York City Workforce Innovation Fund worked to implement a Food Stamp Employment and Training fund model, and the Pennsylvania Fund for Workforce Solutions worked to implement a state-level fund financed through assessments on employers linked to the UI system.

Building Futures: The Urban Construction Initiative Marine Trades Partnership Stepping Up Woonsocket Employment Network

The Rhode Island economy faces twin challenges of a worker gap among employers and a skills gap among workers, which in combination are fueling a squeeze on workers and businesses. While the state is facing challenges in supplying employers with workers having high technical skills, several new initiatives have been launched by state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and local and national foundations to upgrade the quality of services and to foster collaboration across state agencies involved in workforce development.

Building New Labor Market Institutions: State Policies that Support Workforce Intermediaries

States and communities are turning to new labor market institutions known as workforce intermediaries in response to a dual challenge: the need to aid low-skilled workers seeking advancement opportunities and the need to aid employers seeking employees who can help them compete in today's economy. However, workforce intermediaries have grown largely on the local level and independently of major national programs or funding streams, responding to the absence in local labor markets of institutions that can adequately serve low-skilled workers and their employers.
