2016 Frontline Health Care Worker Champions 

CareerSTAT recognized three health care organizations as Frontline Health Care Worker Champions and Emerging Champions for each organization's commitment to and investment in their frontline employees. 

Champion Organization: Fairview Health Services, Minneapolis, MN

Fairview Health Services offers a comprehensive career development program to employees, employee dependents, students and community residents interested in pursuing or advancing careers in health care. Operating for the last 20 years, Fairview’s pipeline programs have helped hundreds of workers develop new careers while also filling some of Fairview’s most critical frontline positions. Ranging from sponsorships and scholarships to on-the-job training opportunities and apprenticeships, Fairview’s investment programs have reduced orientation costs for certain positions by 50%, generating a $40,000 savings the first year of hire. Representing further savings, Fairview has maintained a 99% retention rate for employees in their sponsorship programs, which further reduces turnover and on-boarding costs. These programs have been so successful that senior management believes 80% of future employees will come from their workforce pipeline programs.

Emerging Champion Organization: Parkland Health & Hospital System, Dallas, TX

With a mission to “grow its own,” Parkland Health & Hospital System is committed to helping its employees develop and recently launched Parkland Academy to provide a spectrum of career development programs for its entry-level and frontline employees. Parkland Academy helps prepare workers for careers as Patient Care Assistant/Technicians (PCAT), supports workers in English language and high school completion courses, and provides tuition benefits to employees for advanced education. These programs have helped Parkland overcome local workforce shortages by hiring individuals without medical training, providing real time, on-the- job experiences and helping individuals grow their career and earning potential.

Emerging Champion Organization: Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA

Working to grow its investment in its frontline workers, Baystate Medical Center is on the path to creating a coordinated, comprehensive workforce development initiative that gives all employees the opportunity to learn, grow and develop. In collaboration with local community colleges and their workforce investment board, Baystate provides on-the-job training programs for newly hired medical assistants, pharmacy technicians and medical coders that help less experienced or developing workers transition into high-demand positions. To expand these programs, Baystate is piloting its “Baystate Futures” program to support staff from the areas of environmental services, patient and guest services, and engineering in their exploration of different career opportunities.

CareerSTAT's Frontline Health Care Worker Champion Recognition Program

CareerSTAT’s Frontline Health Care Worker Champion recognition program was created to acknowledge health care organizations that have made a lasting investment in their frontline workers by promoting internal career progression and providing access to on-site training and skills development opportunities. Representing a variety of regions and sub-industries, these employer champions are health care leaders that provide exemplary training and development opportunities for their workers. Furthermore by investing in their workforce they have become more agile, less costly, and more effective at proving high quality care.

 Recognition is separated into two categories:

  • Frontline Health Care Worker Champions: The top award from CareerSTAT recognizes national leaders investing in the skill and career development of employees. These organizations meet all of CareerSTAT's recognition criteria, including making skill and career development accessible to employees, offering programs at a significant scale, measuring program business impact, and building sustainable programs.
  • Emerging Frontline Health Care Worker Champions: This award recognizes employers who are in the earlier stages of making investments in the skill and career development of their employees. They meet some, but not all, of CareerSTAT's recognition criteria.
