Met Council/Medical Pathways

New York
, New York

Medical Pathways is a customized job training, counseling, placement, and retention program for New York City’s health care industry. It meets the needs of employers and the “nontraditional,” low-income, low-skilled job seeker.

Led by the Career Services department of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, the program combines the expertise of a community-based organization in providing wraparound and basic skills training to low-skilled individuals with technical training offered by hospital-based and private for-profit training providers.

The mission of Medical Pathways is to meet the needs of the city’s health care industry for a well-prepared, culturally diverse workforce in high-demand, career-oriented jobs, characterized by productive and satisfying relationships between employers and employees. Through the New York City Sectors Initiative, Met Council seeks to establish an innovative, sustainable and replicable model of job training, counseling, placement and retention.

Participants are trained to become New York State-certified in one three occupations: emergency medical technician; paramedic; and radiologic technologist. These are national shortage, “gateway” jobs into lifelong career paths.
