Workforce1 Transportation Career Center
The Workforce1 Transportation Career Center was launched by the New York City Department of Small Business Services in June 2008. The first large-scale sector initiative in New York City, the Workforce1 Transportation Career Center has two primary goals: 1) to identify and meet the workforce needs of transportation companies in New York City and 2) to connect low-income New Yorkers to quality jobs with career advancement opportunities within the sector.
The Workforce1 Transportation Career Center provides job preparation, occupational training and job placement assistance tailored to the transportation industry for both unemployed and incumbent workers. To date, the Workforce1 Transportation Career Center has achieved more than 1,300 job placements or promotions and enrolled more than 340 individuals in occupational training such as commercial driver’s license, diesel auto mechanic and frontline supervisory training. The most common occupations for the Career Center are bus and truck driver, ramp and baggage agent, cargo screening guard and frontline supervisor.
In addition to worker services, the Workforce1 Transportation Career Center works closely with employers in the transportation industry. Through its set of business services, NYC Business Solutions Transportation, the Career Center has provided more than 80 employers with recruitment and training services, making it easier for those companies to find and keep a qualified workforce.
